Kimberly Crest is an estate of  restorative beauty and welcoming hospitality. Located just two miles south of historic downtown Redlands, our gates are open weekdays and Sundays for guests of all ages to find solace and inspiration in the well-manicured gardens. We are closed on Saturdays for private events and on most major holidays. The house was built in 1897 for Mrs Cornelia A. Hill, one of the pioneers of Redlands.

In 1905, John Alfred Kimberly, a co-founder of the Kimberly-Clark paper company, purchased the home to escape the Wisconsin winters, giving the family name to the property. When the Kimberly family purchased the property in 1905, Mrs Kimberly had the Italian gardens installed on the property. The overall property consists of the main residence (a large 7,000 square foot dwelling), a carriage house, the formal Italian gardens, and several acres of orange groves. One of the first pioneers of Redlands, Cornelia A. Hill, built the estate in 1897. I don’t know who she was, but she had to come with some serious cash to build such a marvelous place — so, she must have been important. So, not long ago, I had a bit of business to do and found myself with hours to meander through the town of Redlands. That always confused me, but then later, I understood her meaning. When she goes shopping, and there are plenty of examples, she will spend hours looking at this and peering at that. Redlands is a wonderful town to visit, but I have not spent much time there.

To motivate support for this worthwhile project, Mrs. Shirk promised to give her home to the “people of Redlands” if the needed money was raised – and the incentive worked, with the park being acquired in 1968. This French château-style Victorian mansion is a registered California Historical Landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It seems Mrs. Shirk had a strong sense of community and purpose. Before her passing, she challenged the city of Redlands to find the cash to purchase the land around the estate and turn it into botanical gardens for the citizens to enjoy.

Upon her death in 1979, by her wishes, Mary Kimberly Shirk donated the home to “the people of Redlands” and established the Kimberly-Shirk Association to run the home and gardens to this day.
